Powerpuff Girls #9 Review

Is this worthwhile or should fans just avoid it? Read on to find out.

The official description from IDW:

The City of Townsville is under a NEW threat! Boy Band fever has struck the Powerpuff Girls, as the heartthrob crooners “3D” are playing a concert in the park! It looks like a magical night to remember, until the Rowdyruff Boys and the Boogieman crash the show! It’s an all out super powered battle of the bands for control of the airwaves! Which team will come out on top of this musical mash-up mayhem?

Powerpuff Girls 9_Preview PageThis is an entertaining outing that makes use of its cast but also leaves room for a few quick cameos. There are some pitfalls, as this entire concept feels like as overly used joke, but even so the talent offers up enough redeemable aspects to make the whole yarn both accessible and functional.

The script handed in by Troy Little is on point as the author takes the concept of music bias and puts it on display. Between the Powerpuff Girls love for boy bands, the Rowdyruff Boys insistence on the hardcore scene or Boogieman‘s push for disco there’s some fun to be had. The dialogue between the various players can be a bit static, but it never feels out of place. This whole release is a solid continuation of the aged TV series, but as I close the comic I can’t help but wish there would have been a bit more going on.

When it comes to a title that seeks to translate a property from one medium to another it can be tricky finding the right visual cadence.  That’s not true here because Troy Little perfectly brings the look and feel of the original show without sacrificing the type of renditions ardent followers have become accustomed to.  From the colors to the actions of Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup there’s many eye popping panels to please any eager follower.

Powerpuff Girls #9 doesn’t break any new barriers, but it’s as rock solid comic that feels like an alright episode from the heyday of Cartoon Network. Recommended.
