Powerpuff Girls #10 Review

After ten issues should fans honestly still pick up this title? Read on to find out.

The official description from IDW:

Boy band fever EXPLODES into all out war, when Boogie Man (fighting for the power of disco) and the Rowdyruff Boys (fighting in the corner of punk rock) attack the Powerpuff Girls and their favorite hunky band. But when Boogie Man uses his groovy powers to turn everyone funky, will anyone come out unscathed?

Powerpuff Girls 10_Preview PageThe city of Townsville… is always in danger! But that’s what makes this satirical comic a welcome return to form for a TV property that perfectly made fun and uplifted the superhero genre. It walked a tight rope but the characters created in the heyday of Cartoon Networks‘s original programming era remained lovable and downright entertaining in just about any adventure. In short: years later they still rock.

Troy Little knows how to write Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup but it’s the author’s ability to recreate familiar narratives without sacrificing the innate personality of the animated series that makes his scripts memorable. I have to admit that the basic concept of this arc worked well enough but the further twists and turns along the way left me a bit unresponsive. These disco time shenanigans brought about a decent enough climax but it was all underwhelming especially considering how quickly everything gets resolved.

The man responsible for the written word also tackles the visual component for this romp. And once again Troy Little dazzles with an impressive display that feels like a one-to-one transition for the original property. Nothing gets lost screen to panel as this talent effortlessly brings characters like Boogie Man and the Rowdyruff Boys to life while adding a few more additions to the roster. Because there’s sugar, spice and everything nice devoted followers need to buy the comic just for the pictures contained within its pages.

Powerpuff Girls #10 doesn’t forge any new ground but it hits the nail on the head when it comes to the core components of this franchise. In other words this release earns a recommendation from me.
