New Warriors #5 Review

Does this issue address any of its problems? Read on to find out.

The official description from Marvel:

• With half the team trapped in the bowels of mysterious and very probably haunted WUNDAGORE MOUNTAIN, the rest of the all-new New Warriors deal with the bar scene in Prague!

• A look inside the mind of happy go lucky SPEEDBALL, the most hated man in America.

• A dog and cat play chess, the result of which could destroy NEW YORK CITY.

New Warriors 5_Preview PageAs someone who purchases quite a few team-up books from both the House of Ideas and DC Comics I just want to say how nice it is to have a title like this one. The creative team has found a way to easily combine these varying personalities into a believable squad with humor and flaws to boot. With that said it’s time to grab a seat and enjoy!

From their opening confrontation with the High Evolutionary to the fact that the Celestials are coming to judge us, Christopher Yost has simply rocked this series. The accomplished scribe knows how to play up the past and current events featured in all of our primary players lives, not to mention the timeline nod to Nova was just excellent. The most impressive aspect for me was the subtle growth of Speedball and the outrageous cliffhanger that spells nothing but trouble for our non-Avengers.

The art by Nick Roche is a simple display that complements the text enough to never hinder it’s forward momentum. And in an issue that calls for some battles, discussions plus a budding romance and there’s plenty of potential pitfalls that the talent never got lost in. Beyond the surefire strokes Ruth Redmond offers up some solid colors to complete the package. In short: from a visual stand point this book is most certainly worth a look.

New Warriors #5 took some interesting turns while still delivering several moments that got me outright laughing. I’m a fan of the title so far and I can’t wait to see what this team does with it in the future. Recommended.

After I read this issue–speeding through what’s been released so far today–I was worried about cancellation, not because the series deserved it, but because I didn’t want such a great series to go away.

I’m glad to see someone else is catching what’s excellent about this book!
