The official description from Marvel:

If it’s not human, it DIES.What does the High Evolutionary want with Nova?

All across the world, the New Warriors come together… SEE! Sun Girl and Haechi deal with Morlocks! WITNESS! Justice and Speedball fight to save magic! CRINGE! As Scarlet Spider refuses to play well with others.

New Warriors 2_Variant CoverThere’s a lot to love within this comic book. We have action, suspense and the formation of a squad that’s not rushed. All things considered we’re seeing a nuanced approach by a strong creative team that recognizes the importance of these young heroes.

After two issue the yet to be fully formed New Warriors have certainly seen a lot of action. Thanks in large part to the competent script delivered by Christopher Yost our diverse cast is thrown directly in the path of what can be described as an extinction level threat. I’ll be honest I was surprised by how easy the author implements aspects from various franchises without sacrificing the core elements which allow each of them to work on their own. My biggest complaint thus far is the fact that Robbie “Speedball” Baldwin is so cheerful, it’s jarring, especially considering his recent history.

I had not seen work done by Marcus To until I dug into this title and I have to say thus far the talent has handed in some excellent pieces. His illustrations capture the raw energy of the characters while giving them room to be themselves. From Nova to Scarlet Spider and the Inhumans or Mutants in between these pencils are certainly up to the high demands of the text. Add in the colors by David Curiel and we have the look of a title that absolutely belongs within the confines of this shared universe.

New Warriors #2 is exactly the right kind of release for this modern landscape. Add in the players behind it and we have an entry level book that deserves to find an audience. Recommended.
