New 52: Futures End #6 Review

Can this weekly series offer enough raw material to garner the investment of discerning consumers? Read on to find out.

The official description from DC:

Ray Palmer, Frankenstein and Amethyst take a dangerous journey into the Phantom Zone! And Batman Beyond’s mission could be over before it begins when someone discovers his arrival five years from now!

New 52-Futures End 6_Preview PageI’ve had my issues with this franchise, but buried beneath the over exposition and massive cast resides an utterly fascinating narrative. And with this release added to the bunch the dark destiny quickly approaching the New 52 is slowly but surely becoming a bit brighter. It can be said that the creative team is delivering something that will ultimately be less than consequential. Especially when our present day Justice League inevitably course corrects the future, but that possibility doesn’t make this outing anything less than entertaining.

The outstanding talents Brian Azzarello, Jeff Lemire, Dan Jurgens and Keith Giffen work to make this entire yarn relevant and engaging. The main gripe I can levy is the fact that we’re still dealing with some rather corny elements. But the inclusion of solid antagonists along with the ever present questions that are simply lingering in the air make the ultimate plot exciting. The mystery surrounding the lead given to Lois Lane, the fate of Red Robin, the works of S.H.A.D.E. and the threat that wiped out Stormwatch are just a few of the nuggets that create their best script yet.

From Terrifitech to the Phantom Zone, Patrick Zircher has the gumption to handle just about anything the text asks him to with no complaints from me. His renditions perfectly emulate what devoted followers have come to expect and a surprise appearance near the end, that I don’t want to spoil, was full of the iconic awesomeness that will get people talking. Thanks to the colors done by Hi-Fi this iteration stands tall with proper support for the illustrations from beginning to end.

New 52: Futures End #6 is the best comic yet in a title that promises excitement, suspense, death, Batman Beyond and most certainly some necessary destruction. Recommended.
