Uncanny Avengers #23 variantThe Avengers Unity Squad was pushed to their limits during the events of Avenge the Earth, with Kang’s cunning plot causing devastating consequences to the psyche of certain characters. Taking place several weeks later, this issue allows the series to catch-up on events that have transpired throughout the Marvel Universe, with the characters emotions fitting around this.

Rick Remender gives us a strong transitional issue between current events and Axis, as though like most transitional issues it didn’t have the same energy, or impact as normal, it still had some impressive moments. The most captivating amongst these was the Rogue’s emotional reaction to the events from Avenge the Earth, with the combination of Simon still being trapped in her head, and her power control getting sent back a step causing some stressful moments. In addition to this Remender gives some good insight into the vast possibilities regarding the series future, having me more excited for Axis than I already was.

I have to say I was in two minds when it came to the artwork throughout this issue, as though Sanford Greene shows some real talent throughout, his unique style just doesn’t work with certain characters. Capturing the emotion, and occasional burst of energy from Remender’s script, Green manages to give a sombre vibe to this tale. He does however at the same time show inconsistency when it comes to facial expressions, as though they all are emotional, some feel to angular, with Wolverine’s characteristics being well off. Despite the pros and cons, the art does get wonderful colours from Dean White, with his intense palette being stunning.

Uncanny Avengers brings the series up to speed with the Marvel Universe, setting up the stage for Axis brilliantly, and thus comes recommend
