Lobster Johnson: Get the Lobster #4 Review

Does this mini-series deliver a worthwhile penultimate issue? Or at the end of the day does the creative team fail to make this yarn compelling? Read on to find out.

The official description from Dark Horse:

After shooting a gung-ho NYPD chief right through the head, Lobster heads to the villains’ massive laboratory, where he’s attacked by two huge steampunk cyborgs!

Lobster Johnson-Get the Lobster 4_Preview PageAfter last month’s explosive cliffhanger I’m sure fans, like myself, were curious to see how our vigilante would escape this latest round of bombardment. Smash-cut to this outing and that’s the least concern as the creative crafts a thoroughly satisfying and endlessly engaging entry that’s bound to please even the most discerning. In short: this Wednesday we have an outing that deserves a spot on your pull-list.

Mike Mignola and John Arcudi work together to make this piece a reality. And it’s through their skill and the buoyancy of the written word that they allow Lobster Johnson and his villains to reach some interesting intersections. Explosions occur while brain manipulation is behind some dastardly turns. It’s a twisted road but one these two scribes traverse with ease, as competent dialogue and a solid pace make it easy for our vigilante to follow his path toward justice. Sure there were a couple moments where just a bit more detail would have been more than welcome but for the most part I closed this comic pleased and satisfied.

My favorite feature for this outing is the art by Tonci Zonjic. Each pencil stroke evokes a compelling atmosphere that’s disarmingly minimalist but still holds enough detail to set the mood. It’s a cinematic endeavor that suits the written word especially during the more over the top and utterly violent sequences. Add in the expressive colors delivered by Dave Stewart and the entire package feels not only complete but downright inviting.

Lobster Johnson: Get the Lobster #4 raises the stakes while offering some memorable moments. There are a lot of pieces at play but this one’s brought to life with a sturdy team at its back and for that reason this easily comes recommended.
