My Little Pony Equestria Girls Holiday Special Review

The Equestria Girls return for a special-sized comic for the Christmas season! Do we have a solid tale? Let’s take a look.

Here’s the official description from IDW:

It’s holiday time at Canterlot High! Sunset Shimmer is still getting used to life on campus, and her new friends. When mean rumors start to circulate, all signs point to Sunset as the source. Will she be able to find the true meaning of the holidays and clear her name?

Like it or not, the Equestria Girls are here to stay. By now I think it’s safe to say all the hate surrounding them has died down. With the release of Rainbow Rocks this year and the confirmation of a third movie, there’s going to be plenty more adventures to come. The MLP human counterparts are no strangers to the comic world; they’ve appeared in last year’s Annual. This time the setting is after Rainbow Rocks and directly in the Christmas season. What we have is not only one of the best My Little Pony comics yet, but also one of the best single issues of the year.

MyLittlePony2-HOLIDAY2014Ted Anderson crafts a tale of that is both heartwarming and mysterious. A comic set in modern day 21st century high school could easily go the other way, but not here. Not only does the writer use the characters we all know and love for a fun story, it’s also used to bring awareness of somethings that people who are in high school are all too familiar with. One of the best lines is when Twilight writes back to Sunset, “It can be spread as easily as pressing a button.” This is referring to the fact that just by the push of a button a person can ruin another’s reputation, which can lead to all sorts of negative things. There’s a lot of genuine emotion, and the mystery of exactly who is “Anon-a-Miss” will keep even the most seasoned reader guessing.

The art by Tony Fleecs is solid throughout, absolutely no complaints. There’s a great amount of emotion which complements the stellar writing. The cover by Fleecs gets the job done for this time of the year. (Fluttershy however looks very off.)

Overall, an excellent one-shot. The writing is phenomenal; not only is it a great MLP story, but it’s a great story set in the high school setting. This is one comic you don’t want to miss.
