The official description from IDW:

Marcus Fall is a battle-hardened soldier in a long-running inter-planetary war. After multiple combat tours, Fall is finally able to leave the military and return to his beloved wife and son. But his happy homecoming comes to a tragic end when a suicide bomber murders his family. Devastated, Fall returns to the war with one bloody mission in mind: revenge against the enemy… every last one of them.

The Last Fall #1 variantWhen I think of Holy Wars I tend to think of Knights and Crusaders. I definitely don’t think of space warriors. It is however this unique twist on two classic genres that really captivated me with the premise being very intriguing. This along with the short history of these planets that’s given just prior to the main story really grabbed my interest having me hooked for the series.

Tom Waltz delivers a solid script with this cross in genres being very unique to say the least. Despite this clever mixture I personally found Waltz character building to be much more impressive with each character having a unique yet strong set of characteristics. Despite this I found the dialogue near the start to be a little perplexing with the tone being all over the place at times.

Casey Maloney did a really good job on the artwork for this story as though at times it felt a little stiff the energy it exacerbated was magnificent. The dynamic layouts and energetic flow of the opening sequence really caught my attention with the characters drive and emotions showing through perfectly. I also loved the overall scenery of this advanced world with Dusty Yee‘s colours helping it to pop out the page. Despite this I did find Maloney’s inks to be a little too harsh as though this helped on occasion it felt slightly overdone the rest of the time.

The Last Fall launches us into a sci-fi war with holy proportions. With an intriguing premise and strong characteristics issue one proves to be very captivating having this fanboy hooked for the remainder of this mini. Recommended.
