Just the Tips Review

When you think of sex, you think of a beautiful and intimate moment between two people that can occur for a myriad of reasons. It can be with the love of your life, it could be with a complete stranger, or it could be someone wearing a bunny costume that wants to bring out the freak in you. Either way the authors, Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky, want you celebrate your inner sexiness and read the fun romp that is Just the Tips.

Created by the same team of Image Comics’ Sex Criminals, Just the Tips is a collection of stories, diagrams, and tips (no pun intended) to spice up your boring and mundane sex life. This includes everything from pick up lines to sexual positions, such as, brimping and queeps. It also goes into many different erotic fictions that are hilarious, with some even including various comic book characters. It is both disturbing and side-splitting.  I will not go into detail about these two, but reading the book will enlighten you.

When I heard of this, I didn’t know what to expect and I think that is the best way to read this book. Now I am huge fan of Sex Criminals, but even that couldn’t prepare me for what I read. Don’t get me wrong, this book is absolutely amazing; it is just a very open book about sex. The best way to describe this book is that it is every dirty thing that you wanted to know, see, and read about sex presented in one nice package.  Even the really dirty things that you didn’t know that you wanted to know, you read in this book and it is hilarious. My favorite part is a short story about a woman that wants to sleep with a vampire. It is very “sexy” but it, also has a really great punch line that hits all the right places.

Fraction and Zdarsky are both just fantastic writers. They know humor to the point that it is genius and this book shows it. Since the book is just a collection of various things about sex, you would think that it wouldn’t have a flow, but it is put together so well that just when you think that you’re going to put it down, you come right back to it. It is just so engaging and fun. Another thing that I really appreciate about the book is that it is universally relatable to people of all sexual orientations. There is straight, gay, lesbian, and more sex within this book. Being a gay man myself, it is nice to feel included and treated the same in mediums, so I give extra points to them for that.

Overall, I think that anybody and everybody of age should be checking out this book. Fraction and Zdarsky are really something special in the comic book world and, now, the literary world as well. Their humor is not only relevant but, also, engaging. You will laugh yourself silly with this book. It is a complete recommend and tell your friends about it as well. I know that I bought a couple copies as Christmas gifts. Just don’t let your Mom see it.
