Having narrowly survived their quest and its dangers, our heroes appear to have run out of luck when they find themselves trapped with no avenue of escape from the dragon’s attack! It looks like certain death—but rescue comes in a most unexpected form.

Eye of Newt #4 previewMichael Hague four part fantasy epic, Eye of Newt comes to an end, with Arthur fighting a giant, and reuniting with Morgan Le Fay. Having gotten off to a rocky start, Eye of Newt has become a thoroughly enjoyable series over the last couple of issues, as though still not mind blowing, the Arthurian twist has certainly made it more interesting.

Bringing his tale to a close, Hauge does a wonderful job of keeping the fantasy element alive, with the exciting exchange between Arthur and the giant being very entertaining. I did however find the issue as a whole to be a little anticlimactic, barging it’s way to the finish line, and feeling a tad rushed. On top of that the actual final sequence just felt plain dull. Despite that there was a little hint of change to the Arthurian legend, and though I’m not usually one for change when it come to legends, it made the story as a whole a little more unique.

One thing that has never been questionable over the course of this four part mini has been the art, with Hauge showing why he’s one of the best fantasy artists out there. Though his art isn’t the most dynamic, considering it’s comic book format, the detail, and scenery is certainly beautiful. The clarity of his painted colours also as ever impresses, with the mixture of colours almost feeling like an exploding rainbow. In addition to all this, the unique layouts also proved eye catching, helping to add a more fantasy like vibe to the issue.

Eye of Newt ends slightly anticlimactically, as though there’s a few enticing moments, the overall quality was lacking. Due to this I can only recommend the issue to people who’re either big Arthurian fans, or people who’ve been following the series. Otherwise give this issue a miss.
