Hollywood Zombie Apocalypse 1_Variant CoverHeading into this narrative journey I had absolutely no idea what to expect from this release. On one hand we had a book that said it was going to carry noticeable famous people while delivering the same thrills horror fans have long expected from a horde of undead. And for the most part the creative team handles their job well, with only a few visual hiccups along the way.

Ralph Tedesco and Joe Brusha pen a script that ebbs and flows with personality. If you’re a fanboy or fangirl that’s been enamored with the Hollywood machine, then there’s no doubt in my mind that there’s plenty of meaty material for you to enjoy. For the most part the text delivers laughs, but every so often a characterization of a star or the antics surrounding them felt a bit too flat.

There were pages where the illustrations handed in by David Lorenzo Riveiro sparked the imagination as I saw some A-listers realized in a way that kept their identity in check. But these were not consistent through out, as several of the actors suffered from what felt like a rush to the finish. Beyond those renditions however the talent nailed our primary, his cohort and the monsters at their door. Add in the colors by Jorge Alberto Cortes and the overall look worked just fine.

Hollywood Zombie Apocalypse #1 effortlessly builds up a zany adventure that suffers a bit. But even so it’s still fun enough to earn a recommendation from me.
