Grimm Tales of Terror #3 Review

Are there frights a plenty? Or is this one horror soaked yarn that simply misfires from beginning to end? Read on to find out.

The official description from Zenescope:

When a college undergrad decides to stay in and study, she finds that a seemingly inconsequential decision leaves a lasting effect on her.

Grimm Fairy Tales 3_Variant CoverI’m going to freely admit that this genre inspired series of one-shot stories is absolutely right up my alley. Maybe it’s because I grew up watching Tales from the Crypt and an avid reader of Goosebumps but right from the get-go I was drawn into these shenanigans. And the creative team once crafts something that’s delightful for any enthusiast like me.

Joe Brusha and Ralph Tedesco work with script writer Meredith Finch to bring this tale of college hi-jinks to life. For anyone who’s been a struggling student in that environment it’s rather tempting to go out and party or hang out with friends rather than crack open a book and study. And that right there is where this author attacks, and for the most part what follows is a predictable plot but with a decidedly devilish twist. And for that reason I walked away from this piece impressed and enthused. And once again we see Keres, the Goddess of the Death at work in the Grimm universe.

It’s the illustrations handed in by Milton Estevam that maintain the right mood for a piece of fiction that dances along the familiar lines of an old fashioned campus nightmare. It’s true that the literary basis is formulaic, but with the assist of consistent pencil strokes and detailed characters the entire comic book comes to life with a fitting visual presence. Add in the dynamic palette of colors by Marcio Freire and the entire piece exists in the right light in order to convey itself.

Grimm Tales of Terror #3 is not going to be for everyone but if you find yourself to be a lover of horror then you need this. With a strong creative team and an easy to follow narrative with Keres to boot, this outing comes recommended.
