Grimm Fairy Tales vs. Wonderland #2 Review

Is this an arc worth exploring or should fans just skip it altogether? Read on to find out.

The official description from Zenescope:

The battle between Calie and Sela rages on! The two most powerful forces in the Grimm Universe find themselves pitted against one another… but when something darker and more sinister rears its ugly head, will the heroes of Grimm Fairy Tales and Wonderland be able to put aside their differences long enough to save the world?

GFT vs. Wonderland 2_Variant CoverI have to admit that this corner of the Grimm Fairy Tales line-up quickly became one of my favorites, especially as each creative team came and went but turned out some really impressive work. The crazy shenanigans of this nightmarish place found their home between horror and family even in the midst of a new age.

Joe Brusha, Ralph Tedesco, and Pat Shand work with script writer Troy Brownfield to continue this unique comic book franchise. Within the lunacy realm that is Wonderland, we’re given an interaction that’s both exciting and promising. The former Guardian of the Nexus comes face to face Calie Liddle and the clash offers up some interesting introspection. The author brings enough to the fore to make the cliffhanger compelling, but I’d be lying if I didn’t say that I wish the confrontation would have been a bit shorter but still there’s solid material here.

The illustrations by Luca Claretti were well suited to the text as the talent effortlessly played with these two iconic characters. Let’s be frank we have a Queen vs. a librarian and they both have superpowers, which results in a series of dynamic panels. The pencil strokes are further accentuated by the colors handed in by Leonardo Paciarotti, which do more than they need to in order to support an already satisfying affair.

Grimm Fairy Tales vs. Wonderland #2 is a good comic by a capable creative team that knows exactly what they want to accomplish. There are a lot of questions left up in the air but there’s plenty of narrative meat to please even the most discerning fanboy or fangirl. Recommended.
