Grimm Fairy Tales presents Wonderland #21 Review

A milestone is fast approaching, but is this still a must own comic book? Read on to find out.

The official description from Zenescope:

Calie has returned to Wonderland with new powers, ready to end the reign of madness that has plagued her and her family’s lives for so long. Unfortunately for her, Wonderland has other plans that include the creation of one of the greatest adversaries Calie has ever faced.

GFT Wonderland 21_CBThe easiest way to sum this up would be to highlight the fact that the saga of the Liddle clan is riddled with twists and turns. But thanks to the creative team, we’re given something that drags their odyssey forward. There’s no doubt this is a mad quest to battle the otherworldly realm known as Wonderland, so its going to get dark.

Why is it every time I close a comic from this corner of the Grimm Fairy Tales franchise, I feel disturbed and intrigued? In the case of this one I blame Raven Gregory. The text for this jaunt jumps at you, because the author attacks the subjects while keeping their narrative in motion. It’s a steady succession that never undermines the fruits of this literary labor while the written word holds onto its flair for the dramatic and the chaotic. I did find some of the transitions to be a bit jarring but by the end it all made some semblance of sense with a striking cliffhanger to boot.

The visual component is on the same level as the text thanks to the steadfast and consistently pleasing work done by JG Miranda. Each panel is given an appropriate level of attention, as this dire adventure earns enough positive renditions to easily please the eye. The illustrations are further elevated by Leonardo Paciarotti as he applies a soft palette of colors that bring life to not only the creatures of Wonderland but the power players therein.

Grimm Fairy Tales presents Wonderland #21 is exactly the type of comic I need on my pull-list. It’s dynamic, entertaining and horrifying with a quality level that simmers with smart execution. Highly recommended.
