Grimm Fairy Tales presents Robyn Hood: Legend #3 Review

In the ever expanding world of Grimm Fairy Tales, is this a journey that needs to be told? Read on to find out.

The official description from Zenescope:

Robyn’s ragtag team of rebels has been divided and Robyn and Will must face the Sheriff of Nottingham’s army on their own. However, when the truth of Will’s impeding fate comes to light, Robyn is down another soldier in the face of the greatest foe she’s ever fought. Will she live up to her legend, or be snuffed out for good?

GFT Robyn Hood-Legend 3_Variant CoverThere’s a lot going on but the way in which this creative team manages to steadily push their narrative forward allows enough room for some worthwhile distractions. The cogs in the machine give depth to several characters that might be worth rooting for while cementing an emotional journey for our heroine. The subtitle for this volume is apt, as our hooded archer struggles under the weight of a legend she feels incomparable to.

Pat Shand continues to prove why he’s a scribe to be reckoned with. He balances out our mismatched team of former enemies turned allies, while cementing paths for each player to follow. Notably there’s a focus on Guy of Gisbourne, that may not redeem the antagonist but rather offers a human perspective on his actions. The result of the author’s hard work is a romp that’s more than worthwhile for dedicated followers, as it ebbs and flows with a weighty narrative at its back.

Add in the stellar illustrations by Larry Watts and fans are sure to be in for a visual treat. He captures the varied cast with simplified renditions, while  offering up enough personality to make each panel feel unique. There are times where the actions of our primaries feel rather static, but thanks to the colors done by Slamet Mujiono there’s a consistent undercurrent that legitimizes each pencil stroke.

Grimm Fairy Tales presents Robyn Hood: Legend #3 is the type of comic I want to review for UTF. In short: this is a solid jaunt that’s got enough going on to be a literary feast. Recommended.
