Grimm Fairy Tales presents Realm Knights: Age of Darkness One-Shot Review

The Realm Knights, an elite group of Highborns working for the US government’s HiboCorp branch, serve to protect Earth’s citizens from otherworldly threats. When the Being – an old foe of theirs that has seemingly disppeared – resurfaces, a team of the most powerful available Realm Knights are called on to bring him down once and for all.

There’s a lot at stake as the pieces of the Dark Queen‘s massive multiple realm plot come into focus. Exactly what she’s been planing to do has been a bit of a mystery, but since her return there’s no doubt that she’s a force to be reckoned with. And as our heroes will soon find out, her reach has grown and infected the places that they thought were safe. And so prepare: for the death toll will rise.

Joe Brusha and Ralph Tedesco work with Pat Shand to bring about what feels like the end, as this literal Age of Darkness racks up the body count with some familiar players. I’m not going to spoil who bites the dust but let’s just say it’s surprising, unsettling and there’s no way you’ll see it all before it happens. So kudos to the literary side of this equation, as they’ve left me wishing that this was all some sort of disturbing dream… in the best way possible.

The illustrations handed in by Marco Lorenzana pop off the page with a kinetic display that offers just enough sensory detail to keep the machine flowing smoothly. Each page gets the attention it deserves as a character team as diverse as this comes face to face with their most pivotal hour. Once you add in the colors done by Claudinei Ribeiro and Andrew Elder there’s no room for error as a dynamic display ebbs and flows with a purpose.

Grimm Fairy Tales presents Realm Knights: Age of Darkness One-Shot is the beginning of something massive that will shake this shared space to the core. This is a must own!
