Grimm Fairy Tales presents Masumi #3 Review

Do fans of the shared GFT universe really need to pick this up? Read on to find out.

The official description from Zenescope:

Sea of Trees

Masumi returned to Japan and discovered that the Yakuza is targeting her cousin, Mei, in hopes of exploiting her family’s artifacts. When Mei and her fiance, Hiroto, refused the Yakuza, they send their enforcer, Ryujin, to murder Hiroto.

GFT Masumi 3_Variant CoverOne of the main heroes from Grimm Fairy Tales Unleashed gets more time in the spotlight thanks to this mini-series. And as “Blades of Sin” ramps up its body count the creative team’s mission gets even more clear. In other words: the comic continues what has already been an engaging experience that’s sure to please.

Pat Shand, Joe Brusha and Ralph Tedesco work with scribe Joe Tyler to realize this latest outing. Our demon huntress has had a very hard life, thanks in large part to the legacy of her bloodline, but even in the face of tragedy and loss Masumi perseveres. And I think her strength and willingness to go on is something that both fanboys and fangirls need to take note of, especially as the author uses direct dialogue to cement that characteristic. Add in a handful of sequences highlighting the established curse of the Yamomoto clan, their current struggle against the Yakuza and we’re left with a sturdy package.

Right from the first page to the final panel it’s abundantly clear that Sergio Osuna carries a firm grasp on the material at hand. Each scene is given just enough detail to cement a style that fits this tale featuring the blades possessed by Legion. There were moments where some of the facial formations came off rather rushed, but these instances were brief distractions in comparison to the overall experience. Especially when the colors by Francesca Zambon covered those renditions with a dynamic and welcoming layer.

Grimm Fairy Tales presents Masumi #3 is a direct continuation that highlights the struggle of its titular heroine. For the most part it’s a by the numbers extension but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t entertained. Recommended.
