Fairest #28 Review

Will the Farm Fables finally get their Glamors? Read on to find out.

The official description from Vertigo:

At the Farm, all the talking animals, birds, and other non-humans discover that to get what they wish for will depend on the luck of the draw. And while a spider in Haven longs for the chance to be with his love, Reynard discovers that his attempts to woo a fairytale princess have earned him a one-way trip to a whole heap of trouble. The final arc of FAIREST continues here!

FAIRES-28-3-7b05fAs main series Fables starts to build to it’s eventual conclusion, spin-off series Fairest tried to tie-off some loose ends, with Prince Charming’s promise of Glamors returning. Having had a very enticing opening issue, The Clamour for Glamour continues to impress, with Renyard getting on the wrong side of Snow, whilst the Farm Fables remain bitterly hopeful.

Mark Buckingham has made a terrific transition into writing, with the regular Fables artist producing a charming and entertaining tale. Using his knowledge of the series to great effect, Buckingham fleshes out a fun and dramatic tale, that’s chock full of emotion. It is however the more humorous parts of this tale that appeal to me the most, with the slyness of Renyard being very captivating. Despite all this I did find the transition between sequences to be at times less than smooth.

Russ Braun‘s artwork over this tale has also really impressed me, with the charming tone being perfect for the tale. Having a fun and unique vibe throughout, Braun manages to capture the lighthearted tone of Buckingham’s script, whilst also giving some intense moments when needed. It is however the full package that impresses me, with the backgrounds and scenery being just as spectacular as the character expressions. In addition to this the soft colour palette of Andrew Dalhouse suited the tempo of this tale perfectly.

Fairest continues to be a great companion book for Fables, as though not quite as good it’s still entertaining. Highly recommended.
