The Blood Queen #2 Review

Should you make room for this medieval yarn on our pull-list? Read on to find out.

The official description from Dynamite:

Dynamite’s new dark fantasy epic continues! Elizabeth’s new life at court grows more complicated as the king’s niece and the Elder arrive. How does this affect her mission, and what secrets do another investigation in the kingdom hold? And, as passions ignite between Elizabeth and Sir Ferenc, prepare yourself for a shocking final panel! It’s all from writer Troy Brownfield and artist Fritz Casas, and we’re just getting started.

The Blood Queen 2_Variant CoverThe second outing isn’t up to the level of the first, but this brand new property compels as its narrative seems to play the long game, Game of Thrones style. Each piece that the creative team brings to the fore feels relevant, as relationships are forged and future duplicitous deals earn their underlying reference. To sum up: there’s no doubt in my mind that this is a book worth picking up.

Troy Brownfield pens the script and the seasoned talent knows exactly how to spin a fantasy yarn.  Our primary lead continues to plot her way around the royal court while making time to demonstrate her mastery of people and blood magic. The author easily flexes the right muscles to give this yarn some seamless credibility, but there are moments where the dialogue seems downright stale. Truth be told these lackluster instances are few and far between and do little to hinder the rest of the text.

The illustrations by Fritz Casas are immaculate to say the least. The talent effortlessly builds this world without ever hindering the eye with unnecessary details or tangents. The entire body of work flows in an easy succession, especially when you add in the colors done by Kristy Swan. The whole of these visuals are high quality and I have very little to complain about.

The Blood Queen #2 is another engaging outing that bares some lackluster moments here and there, but continues to lay enough seeds to offer a promising future. To put it simply: this is a comic book that earns my recommendation.
