Red Team #6 Review

Red Team Banner

Has this series shaped up into a piece of fictions that’s really compelling, or has the creative team ultimately squandered their own efforts?  Read on to find out.

The official description from Dynamite:

All the cards are on the table, and everyone knows where every player stands. A trap is laid- but is Red Team about to be beaten at their own game? A malevolent foe makes his move at last, in the sixth and penultimate episode of Red Team.

Red Team 6_CWith just one remaining bit to this sordid play, this chapter sees death then destruction as our team of renegades come face to face with darker corruptions within their own department.  There’s a lot that successfully sinks in here but the bulk of the comic book just feels far too familiar to escape its own trappings.   The end result is a competent yarn but one that does not become more than the sum of its parts.

The script by Garth Ennis fits the confines of his usual hard hitting affair but there’s some dialogue that just feels off.  Characters speak but the voice of the author comes out in ways that hinder the overall enjoyment of an otherwise capable piece. With that said the bullet points cemented the potential for the final entry, as a barrage of events sent this release barreling toward its inevitable conclusion.  In short the skeleton keeps things going but some of the meatier portions are less than satisfying, especially for an audience that has kept up with this property.

Craig Cermak lends his pencil to this jaunt.  He illustrates with the best of them as he steadily builds and breathes life into a society that’s full of positive and negative influences within these dark circumstances.  The singular strength of the entire franchise  has been his consistent hand, as the renditions unfold before a barrage of legitimacy in a tale that requires nothing less than authenticity.

Red Team #6 is a romp that has a fair amount of problems, but there are elements that I honestly enjoy.  For that reason it squeaks by with a light recommendation.
