Queen Sonja #34 Review

The penultimate issue for the series has arrived, but does the creative team deliver something that’s worthy of the legacy behind this storied franchise? Read on to find out.

The official description from Dynamite:

Sonja takes the fight to Hyrkania itself, and finishes the war where it all began. The question is, who will stand when kingdoms fall?

As this latest epic barrels forward, the she-devil with a sword faces some harsh truths when her time as queen comes to a bitter but honest conclusion. The creative team delivers on every possible level here, as this red headed woman rides hard and fast in order to see her thirst for vengeance irrevocably quenched.  And in the end what we receive is dynamic.

Luke Lieberman pens the script and the series writer delivers something that was both brutal and beautiful in all the right ways.  Through the use of multiple layers we’re treated with a heartfelt literary journey that exemplifies both the best and worst characteristics associated with Red Sonja.  If ever there was any doubt about the nuances or depth inherent in this franchise than this release outright dispels them as it embraces a concrete plot that attacks right at the literal heartstrings.  In short what we’re given is an exemplary journey that’s sure to excite devoted followers as we all face the aftermath of our heroine’s epic reign.

The art done by Milton Estevam in this specific outing is exceptionally solid as it intricately but boldly realizes this complex narrative.  His depictions of both the characters and the world they inhabit inspire an heir of originality that ebbs and flows with authenticity.  From the first page to the final panel I was honestly impressed with the sweeping body of work that yielded emotion and violence in a way that almost felt natural to the whole of the saga.

Queen Sonja #34 is by far one of the best releases that this series has produced, as it offers up a personal and powerful climax that’s sure to please longtime fans while exciting them for whatever end the conclusion might bring.  Recommended.
