Prophecy #5 Review

The event series continues to press on but is there enough life-blood left in it to make this whole thing worthwhile?  Read on to find out.

The official description from Dynamite:

The battle for Earth’s survival continues! Mankind must depend upon champions including Red Sonja, Vampirella, Dracula, Pantha, Herbert West the Reanimator and Athena to stand against sorcerer Kulan Gath and his doomsday gods! Will our heroes have to sacrifice themselves in order to save the world?

Following last month’s issue I was honestly left wondering where the next bit of this arc might take its readers.  I thought for sure that the action would die down and the creative team would attempt to offer some filler so the story could find its footing again, boy was I wrong.  As soon as I opened this comic book I was instantly floored by the energy and innate focus brought forth by this very talented duo as as this latest release doesn’t skip a beat.

Ron Marz pens the script and the series writer delivers a fast moving romp that effortlessly moves the narrative forward.  This rather zany chessboard experiences a bit of a shake-up as all of the varied pieces move a few spaces yielding a compelling and gleefully fun interpretation of the end of the world.  The dialogue itself doesn’t inspire any depth but by Mitra, the author nails every possible cadence no matter how corny they come off.  The end result is a fun read that will have plenty of followers grinning ear-to-ear as their unique hero or heroine gets some well-deserved screen time.

Walter Geovani handles the art duties and this talent absolutely nails it.  Whether he’s using his strong design sense to realize Red Sonja fighting a gigantic monster or Sherlock Holmes investigating a mystery, the pencil work on display here is certainly up to the task.  The artist evokes some breathtaking visualizations as the characters, the backgrounds and even the panels pulsate with a unique energy that simply propels the series into its next act.

A surprise ending and a fast pace easily make Prophecy #5 a must-own release for fans of any of these storied franchises.  Recommended.
