Peter Cannon: Thunderbolt #6 Review

Is the saga surrounding an imagined dragon and this specific hero still compelling six issues in or have they both overstayed their respective welcomes?  Read on to find out.

The official description from Dynamite:

In “Darkness on the Edge of Town,” the Inventor ponders his assault on Manhattan, while Thunderbolt encounters the powerful and mysterious Adam and Eve-and we learn the tragic story of the man known as the Hooded One!

When it comes to this saga the basic plot points established by the first adventure are observed, and for better or worse the story has not really expanded its scope since then.  The end result is a tale that’s engaging as it handily survives on its own unique merits while slowly but surely moving things forward.

The script by Steve Darnall and Alex Ross from start to finish is a thoroughly realized read that will make most audience members feel like they are on the cusp of learning something truthfully important but then the comic book ends.  These authors do successfully bring a level of candor to the proceedings which makes each little beat quite easy to follow but they also allow some wholly corny dialogue.  The end result is something that’s still worth your time but there may be a few instances where you have to simply shrug your shoulders and let some of the questionable writing go by the wayside.

Beyond the text the art by Jonathan Lau absolutely shines in this latest adventure. It’s not an action packed romp by any account but what we get here is a personal journey where our talent really has to step up his game in order to nail the correct candor and cadence demanded by the narrative.  Each pencil stroke brings about an exceptional level of detail that seamlessly builds this world by giving it a believable spin when facing some truly unrealistic sequences.

Peter Cannon: Thunderbolt #6 is not a perfect outing by any stretch of the imagination, but it does more than enough to offer up something that’s absolutely entertaining and for that reason it earns a recommendation.
