Pathfinder #6 Review

This exquisite pain only fuels my fury…” ~Mother

The heroes come face-to-face with the ‘Mother of Monsters’ in this action-packed issue. Does it end the arc well enough with the quality we’ve come to expect from the series? For sure, it might be the most fun issue to date.

Here’s the official description from Dynamite:

Under an ominous formation of stars, the chaotic evil god Lamashtu has sent its spawn forth to wreck havoc and conquer in its mother’s name. Bloodied and nearly driven mad, the Pathfinder adventurers must stand together in final battle against its destructive might.

Pathfinder is probably the best fantasy title on the stands. Not only is the story traditional and the action fun, but the characters are great. There is no such thing as an unlikable character here, they’re all fun to read with each having a unique personality and ability. This issue is the final one of the first arc, which pits the heroes against the Mother of Monsters herself. It’s pretty much an all-actioner, which is appropriate considering the scope of the battle. Get ready for some of the most fun you’ll have this week in comics.

Jim Zub’s writing is once again a blast to read. Even in the heart of battle each character retains their unique voice. From Meri’s sarcasm to Kyra’s holy talking against the beast, the characters make the story. But the star is naturally the Mother herself. She’s pretty much the definition of ‘Mother of Monsters,’ having a merciless personality. I think she could have been written a little better so she could have been more unique, but nonetheless her blunt words and design is cool on their own. The action heats up and despite getting stabbed a plethora of times, she still keeps coming. The battle does not disappoint.

Andrew Huerta’s art is fun to look at as always. The characters don’t look as detailed as they should this time, but it’s a minor thing when you consider how cool the Mother looks. The action is gritty but never becomes too dark, there’s still a sense of lightness which the art conveys greatly. The covers are nothing short of fantastic. The main one features an incredible shot of Mother, definitely the cover to pick up.

Overall, a fun conclusion to the first epic arc of Pathfinder. The battle with Mother is satisfying and it also sets things up nicely for the next story. People should be checking out this series if they like anything fantasy and great characters.
