Nova #2 Review

In the face of discovering his inheritance, can this young hero rise to the challenges around him?  Read on to find out.

The official description from Marvel:

• A boy, a helmet, and an intergalactic legacy!

• Sam Alexander isn’t just any 15-year old, he’s just been recruited to the Nova Corps: the Universe’s police force.

• What do you get when you pair a raccoon, a green alien lady and a scared teenager? An amazingly awesome origin tale!

In the world of the Marvel Universe there are certainly a diverse amount of characters.  From the young to the old each has their own unique journey to share but in truth this is the first one I’ve felt so attached to following a relatively new debut.  It’s true there has been a Nova before, but not one quite like this.

Jeph Loeb pens the script and the seasoned scribe turns in some his best work to date.  And despite several of the story elements existing as nothing more than stereotypes there is an inherent but raw honesty that’s sure to captivate a whole new audience as this corner of the House of Ideas gets some attention.  Sam Alexander has stepped into his father’s shoes, but little does he know that he’s about to enter into something that’s certainly much bigger and scarier than what he could imagine.  But still the author works with his character, nurtures him and sets him up in a way that promises more adventures to come.

The art delivered by Ed McGuinness is simply top notch as the talent plainly but stylistically draws this local but interstellar bound saga.  From the first page to the last panel I was positively floored by what I was seeing via a visual aspect.  Each pencil stroke offered just enough detail backed by more than enough intelligent design to make this outlandish but engaging comic book work on every possible level.

Nova #2 is a spectacular follow up to last month’s launch, in a way that makes it near impossible to wait and see what happens next for this property. Recommended.
