Nova #13.NOW Review

It’s a new day for the latest Human Rocket, but should you really care? Read on to find out.

The official description from Marvel:

All-New Marvel Now means some All-New Nova Wow!

After Infinity, Inhumanity, and the landmark 100th appearance of Nova, it’s been a crazy year for the galaxy’s newest hero! As Sam Alexander continues to hunt down clues of the Nova Corps demise, he finds an all new threat of his own making. But the arrival of former Mjolnir-wielder Beta Ray Bill means Nova’s days may be numbered.

NOVA2013013_int_LR2-3I can’t help but enjoy this book. Maybe it’s because I’m enamored with the cosmic side of this universe but there’s an innate charm that allows this series to stand on different ground than say Guardians of the Galaxy. I honestly think it has to do with the stellar creative team at its back.

Gerry Duggan continues to lead this new Nova into some fresh territory. What makes this whole thing work is the fact that our protagonist is a teenager that’s trying to be a superhero and with that goal comes mistakes. He made a huge one in #12 and now’s it’s time to figure out how to fix it, thankfully he has help from an interesting ally. The comic itself works on several levels and that’s in large part because of the naturally flowing dialogue, the scribe makes you feel for Sam rather than dismiss him.

At this point I can honestly say that Paco Medina is an awesome talent that has a knack for crafting some dazzling panel. The sheer amount of detail found on each page is more than enough to sell me on the talent, but there is still room to grow. His depictions of the human characters come off a bit too quirky but, like the rest of the work on display, he’s improving with each page. Combine that with the colors by David Curiel and you have a recipe for a smart looking book that deserves to be on your pull-list.

Nova #13.NOW is a really good jump on point that earns a recommendation.
