Noir #3 Review

Noir 2014 Banner

There’s a lot to love with this little crossover, but after three issues is it still worth following? Read on to find out.

The official description from Dynamite:

The unlikely team of The Black Sparrow and Miss Fury strong arm the Mohawk Akash into revealing a map they hope will lead them to the lost treasure of the Templars. But is the map actually worthless without the rune codes? Their quest takes them deep into the wilderness and to an ancient place that’s been locked away for centuries. Danger and betrayal lurk around every corner.

Noir 3_CI have to say that when I began covering this title for UTF, I was caught off guard by how much I enjoyed it. And thanks to a strong creative hand behind these proceedings, I can gleefully report that it’s still engaging. It’s not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but it is fun from the first page to its final panel.

Victor Gischler hands in a solid entry, that sees both of our heroines doing their best as they trek toward treasure. It’s a path fraught with obstacles, but I have to say whoever came up with the idea of bringing Miss Fury and The Black Sparrow together, kudos, because the chemistry between the two is undeniable. Beyond the workable banter however the author delivers two dimensional threats that lack depth, but still the high adventure aspect of the piece along with its solid pacing keep the work flowing smoothly as it reaches another cliffhanger.

The pencils by Andrea Mutti carry the innate strength of the text while also offering up some compelling reasons to pay attention to this book. There are some inconsistencies, where some of the renditions leave much to be desired, but the bulk of the display works quite well. I have to say that near the end, the talent really got to show off some skills and I can’t wait to see what comes in #4.

Noir #3 is a good comic book that may not set any records, but it certainly does more than enough to garner your attention. Recommended.
