My Little Pony Micro Series #2: Rainbow Dash Review

The second installment of the My Little Pony Micro Series is upon us. This time it stars the tomboy of the group, the fastest pony in all of Equestria, who invented the phrase ‘20% cooler,’ the one and only Rainbow Dash. Does this comic do a good job with her?

Here’s the official description from IDW:

The next in a series of spotlights focusing on everyone’s favorite Ponies!

Rainbow Dash takes her job patrolling the skies very seriously, but she may have met her match when a group of mischievous cloud gremlins threaten to block out the sun!

Rainbow Dash will have her hooves full when it comes to these pint-sized menaces!

Here we have a story testing Rainbow Dash’s power and limits. How far will she go to save Ponyville? While it wasn’t quite as good as the Twilight Sparkle comic, (well, maybe Dash fans will enjoy it more!)  it’s still a pretty ‘cool’ issue that fans of the character will appreciate.

Ryan Lindsay crafts a story using the title character at her weakest and strongest. Rainbow Dash is a character that doesn’t give up, even if it would cost her life. She is written very well for the most part. Her personality is kept intact, no real complaints. While Lindsay understood Rainbow, his Applejack didn’t fare as good in some scenes. (Only Rarity says darlin’.) Still, it was ‘cool’ how he used Applejack. She didn’t steal the spotlight away, rather she complimented the story since it’s always nice to see other mane ponies. The villains are Gremlins. (Fans of the original film will get a kick out of them.) Their dialogue is pretty amazingly well done. The parts with the ‘cloud’ talking to Rainbow about how she’ll never win were brilliantly evil. It was also nice to see Rainbow interacting with Tank, so far we’ve really only seen that in the episode Just for Sidekicks.

Tony Fleecs handles the art, and it’s solid. It’s better than what we saw in the Twilight Sparkle comic. Still, it lacks the pizzazz Andy Price has in the Ongoing. It mimics the look of the show well enough however, so it’s good. The covers deserve great mention. The first one is very nice, having Rainbow doing her Sonic Rainboom across a sky backdrop. Cover B is more adventurous and less Alex Ross. It’ll probably be the fan favorite among Bronies, because Rainbow looks hardcore against a fiery background. The RI continues the tradition set with the previous issue, having the title character as a filly. It’s pretty adorable to say the least. And once again, there are plenty of store exclusive variants, so pick your favorites. (Gotta give props to the Double Midnight artistic one.)

Overall, the Micro Series #2 is a good story featuring everyone’s favorite Pegasus. It might feel a bit dull at times, but it’s still a fun read. Plus it has actual villains with pretty great dialogue. We get to see Rainbow at her strongest, giving all she has against the Gremlins  One might question why Princess Celestia wasn’t aware of something happening to Ponyville for 28 days, but I digress. MLP fans will like this comic.
