Morning Glories #27 Review

Has this complex but compelling narrative finally reached the point where it has become far too confusing to follow?  Read on to find out.

The official description from Image:

“THERE IS NO BEGINNING”

The double-sized Season 2 premiere! With an astonishing array of covers by some of the hottest artists working today: JENNY FRISON, ROB GUILLORY, SHAWN MARTINBROUGH, JAMIE McKELVIE, EMMA RIOS and MORNING GLORIES’ own JOE EISMA!

From the pilot to this series onward the title has danced a fine line that’s all too familiar to fans of long lasting mystery serials.  For every question that is asked and answered, eight more spring up in its place.  From that slightly exaggerated perspective eager fans might be dis-swayed from this experience, but trust me when I say this is something that’s worth following.

The script by Nick Spencer is as sturdy as it is confounding, but the most gifted aspect of the written word found here is brought forth by its innate familiarity.  Whenever I pick up this book I’m always enthralled by how easy it reads to the point that in the moment I don’t feel confused at all.  I simply hang on each and every scene, eagerly flipping pages toward the assured cliffhanger that’s mere moments away.  Much to the author’s credit, his work in that regard has made this into an accessible journey that continues to offer many layers to its proceedings.

Joe Eisma handles the art, and once again each of the characters is beautifully rendered in the most sophisticated fashion possible.  There certainly were some challenging illustrations here and there, as the talent is forced to bring to life some painful and emotionally charged sequences and to his credit he does so with a level of candor that is simply welcome.  With that said there are some minor instances where facial expressions looked a tad bit off, leaving something to be desired from the finished product.

Morning Glories #27 is another endlessly engaging and thoroughly engrossing affair that continues to spin this tale of mad mysteries while offering up some helpful nuggets along the way.  Highly recommended.
