Mind the Gap #8 Review

The murder-medical soap opera mystery from Image continues.

Here’s the official description from Image:

“WISH YOU WERE HERE,” Part Three

The struggle between Katie and Elle’s mind is settled, and the winner still loses, as a difficult choice must be made. An uneasy alliance is formed to clear Dane’s name as Lonnie becomes an even bigger threat. Lives hang in the balance, and more than one person will find Death knocking on their door…

There’s a big conspiracy at work here, Elle’s Mom and dad have an interesting chat with a doctor who is also in on it. Meanwhile Elle is still in the body of ten year old Katie. What will happen now? I’ve voiced my concern about this comic before.  I’m not sure how long it can continue at this pace, without the usual melodramatic tropes taking their toll on readers, but thankfully we haven’t reached that point yet.

Jim McCann’s writing is strong throughout. I’m not sure about the cursing since this takes place in an hospital, but besides that, the writing is once again the book’s strongest aspect. Sadly there are once again no major plot developments. Instead, we get some very interesting dialogue with Elle’s mom Min and Edward Sr which slowly pushes the conspiracy forward. It begs the question of why Elle is being targeted  Who is Hoodie? These are the questions that continue to move the series. While still pretty engaging, I expect to see some major plot developments in the next issue.

Rodin Esquejo’s art shines throughout. I really like how bright, glossy, and detailed everything looks. The cover is pretty clever, having part of Katie’s face take center stage with Elle ‘trapped’ in her eye. Another thing about the story McCann succeeds in doing is utilizing all the characters. None of them are thrown to the side, each play a key role in the story.

Overall, another solid issue of Mind the Gap. Obviously the highlight is seeing Elle’s mom. Why does she want her daughter dead? Why is the father there too? Why is the doctor involved? This issue asks some more questions but doesn’t deliver any questions, and if #9 isn’t especially revelatory,  the series could take a major score hit.
