Mass Effect: Foundation #2 Review

Dark Horse’s Mass Effect ongoing series is finally back. While not quite as coherent as the first issue, it’s a pretty fun second issue fans will like for the most part.

Here’s the official description from Dark Horse:

Urdnot Wrex-one of the most dangerous mercenaries in the galaxy-crosses paths with a mysterious secret agent in this explosive adventure!

The interesting thing about this issue of Foundation is that it doesn’t really tie into its predecessor. Instead, it focuses on a few individuals for a standalone adventure. Wrex is probably one of the big selling points, which is understandable since a lot of people like him. What we have is an entertaining story with…humor? It’s actually pretty light-hearted, which can be a good or bad thing depending on the reader.

Mac Walters returns with a pretty good script. The characters are all pretty likable with Wrex naturally being the most interesting of the bunch. The story itself is kinda hard to follow at first, even for players, but by the middle you’re pretty into it. There’s never really a sense of scope however, it feels like a light-hearted adventure instead of something very serious. This could be a nice change of pace for some people, or rather lackluster to others. A lot of the dialogue will bring some good chuckles, such as the scene in the elevator.

Tony Parker’s art is solid. He can draw a really good Krogan, he gives Wrex some good emotion. The backgrounds could use a little more detail however, it really never gave the feeling that the whole thing was taking place in the Citadel. The cover is quite cool to look at, featuring a nice shot of Wrex shooting down a Citadel guard. It’s simple, but gets the job done.

Overall, while not quite as good as the previous issue, Foundation #2 is a pretty fun read. The characters are good and Wrex naturally steals the show. I do hope more of a bigger story is established in coming issues however.

3.5/5
