Justice League of America #6 Review

Trinity War continues here, but is this arc all it’s cracked up to be?  Read on to find out.

The official description from DC:

TRINITY WAR CHAPTER 2!

The War of the Justice Leagues continues as one hero is arrested and another goes rogue. Who is responsible for the evil that has infected the League? And who is the true killer? Only the Question knows the answer…

When this event was first teased I honestly felt like it was going to be a haphazardly thrown together mess that would ultimately fizzle out into obscurity, at this point I feel like I can admit I was wrong.  The creative teams behind this have seen fit to  give logical reasons as to why several chief superheroes in this universe resort to beating each other up while telling a story that’s worth sharing.

Geoff Johns and Jeff Lemire do an absolutely outstanding job spinning this yarn as they put all their pieces on a chessboard that just feels ripe for not only chaos but honest confrontation.  Sure there have been plenty of stories in the past that have capitalized on hero versus hero violence but I haven’t felt this invested or raw about a particular scuffle since I read Marvel’s Civil War event.  To their credit the authors know their players well enough that each line of dialogue reads true to the core mechanics of their character, especially the reactions to the death in the prior outing and the revelation of the apparent man behind it.

The art by Doug Mahnke has some rough spots but for the most part he nails a tempo that matches the power of this tale.  I was particularly impressed with his ability to make each hero stick out even in the most overpopulated sequences. Using thick and thin pencil strokes the illustrator brings this war to chilling life, especially when he shows the emotions behind a particular man of steel.

Justice League of America #6 is the second part of this six issue event and I have to say after two acts I’m sold on the concept.  Highly recommended.
