Justice League Dark #22 Review

Heroes are beginning to choose sides in a game they don’t fully understand, but is this event still worthy of your attention?  Read on to find out.

The official description from DC:

TRINITY WAR CHAPTER 3!

A member of the Justice League defects to Justice League Dark. But what does Constantine know about this murder that he isn’t telling? And what dark secret does one of our Leaguers hold that could turn the tide of this Justice League War?

The creative team delivers something that’s sure to have fans talking as we reach the half way point in this odyssey.  I’m not going to lie, the various battle lines and shifting sides ultimately lessen the impact that was present in the previous two chapters but trust me the overall saga is still going strong.

Jeff Lemire pens the script and the scribe succeeds in pushing this narrative forward.  By revealing a possible lead on the death of Doctor Light and the inclusion of the Phantom Stranger the world is starting to get complicated, as heroes cling to their gut reactions to decide where they go from here.  The title of Trinity War seems apt as Batman, Wonder Woman and Superman form their own teams in the most cosmetic fashion possible and that right there is the weakness.  They are all fundamentally overreacting to the situation, because each player wants the same thing despite there being disagreement on how to get it done.

The art by Mikel Janin is strong from the first page to the final panel.  Taking into consideration the wide range of superheroes present in this issue it’s a marvel that the talent was able to create a visual pallet that complemented the text so well.  His depictions of each moment, for the most part, creates an atmosphere that will satisfy even the most discerning critic.  There were some missteps along the way as some facial expressions looked a bit out of place but these instances were rare.

Justice League Dark #22 is a good comic that keeps this event going as it does just what it needs to.  Recommended.
