Jinnrise #9 Review

Jinnrise 2014 Banner

The official description from IDW:

In an effort to the defeat the alien Kibrani, Andrew and his ragtag team continue their quest to assemble an army of Jinn (Genies)!  Two jinn bottles remain to be found, and together they hold the key to Earth’s fate.  The jinn and their human allies prepare for the final battle, but the key to victory may mean handing the Kibrani their most powerful weapon yet.

Jinnrise 9_CWhen I review titles that attack social issues, I have to say I often close the book with a bigger grin than I do when I thumb through a mindless but entertaining barrage of action. Thankfully this franchise has always walked the line between both, with hints of greater depth that are realized in the most decidedly unexpected ways.

David Liss continues to impress, as his steady pen pushes our players further along their path fraught with confrontations. Along the way we get to see the true origins of one of their members, as these allies face a bit of an intersection as they choose what matters most: species or the content of character? Beyond that the scribe also allows some decidedly potent twists and turns that perfectly set the stage for the tenth and final outing of this opening act. In short: if this release is any indication, than we’re in for a wild ride.

One of the strongest aspects of this franchise has got to be the outstanding illustrations by Andrew Huerta. He captures a rendition that embodies the spirit of the text without sacrificing function. But perhaps the most important thing is that the talent accomplishes a feeling of scale, as his work embraces a wide variety of design choices that should be described as epic. To sum up: enjoy the story but stay for the engaging pictures.

Jinnrise #9 is yet another strong entry in this sterling franchise. So grab a seat, get comfortable and prepare for a fantastical adventures with intergalactic implications. Highly recommended.
