Jinnrise #8 Review

New Jinnrise Banner

In the face of such terrible might, can anything really be done to save our world? Read on to find out.

The official description from IDW:

In an effort to the defeat the alien Kibrani, Andrew and his ragtag team continue their quest to assemble an army of Jinn (Genies). Imprisoned for centuries in China, two powerful Jinn may hold the key, but can they be released? Meanwhile, Kibrani Warrior Lahasad Brim will face his greatest test, and a team member’s dark secret is revealed!

Jinnrise 8_CSohaib Awan launched this comic with a rather goofy but engaging premise.  And after eight issues and under the stewardship of a new scribe, the property continues to be compelling.  To the creative team’s credit what’s found within the confines of these pages paints an interesting picture that sends this fist volume on a collision course that’s sure to make the forthcoming finale truly outstanding.

David Liss is without a doubt a talented writer, and this latest entry proves that fact as he moves things along in some bold directions.  The aliens continue their attempts to best the humans as subtle and hopelessly obvious questions of morality come into play.  We are dealing with something that’s best described as outlandish but what makes it work is the fact that there are enough believable moments that sell us on the authenticity of our cast.  There were some shortcomings, as an overabundance of predictable occurrences hindered my overall experience with this outing.

The art by Andrew Huerta is something to behold.  He lavishes the page with creatures and details that invade the imagination with as much fury and purpose as a caged genie.  In just the opening panels, the wide birth of his skills come into play as he illustrates ships, species and a ravaged city without breaking a sweat. In short: pick up this comic book, enjoy the text but marvel at the captivating illustrations.

Jinnrise #8 is a wonderful addition to this franchise.  And if you haven’t been buying this series, than it’s time to get the back issues and find yourself a quiet spot.  Recommended.
