Jinnrise #7 Review

Do we really need this series to continue?  Or has this war overstayed its initial wave of destruction?  Read on to find out.

The official description from IDW:

In an effort to the defeat the alien Kibrani, Andrew and his ragtag team continue their quest to assemble an army of Jinn (Genies).  Their mission leads to a labyrinth on the Isle of Crete.  Will they find their most powerful ally… or something more terrible than the horrors of Greek myth?

Beneath the rubble that now liters our planet, a ragtag team works together to bring hope to a struggle that seems to defy logic.  The Earth is the subject of an interplanetary conquest, and as our forces fail it’s the creatures of myth that rise to the challenge.  Along with their compatriots they might summon enough strength to defeat these persistent hordes.

David Liss continues the groundwork laid by series creator Sohaib Awan, by using a complicated situation to illuminate some fathomable philosophical questions.  That might sound strange, but that’s what the author does, even as our party enters a darkened labyrinth full of death.  I war particularly captivated by the simple conversations within the confines of these pages.  As a franchise, this title has always held a regard for deep discussion in the midst of a journey that seems odd to say the least.  There were some stumbles along the way, as the dialogue offered revelation but seemed forced at times.

The art by Andrew Huerta fits the narrative in a way that’s complimentary.  It never dances outside of its defined wheelhouse but there is something special about it nonetheless.  The end result is that each panel receives just a little bit of edge.  If I had to compare it to another illustrator in the field, I would say that the style lightly reminds of David Finch meets Tony Moore, as there is plenty of detail and line work to be found as this visual dance kicks off.

Jinnrise #7 is a superb comic book that once again makes a solid case for the total worth of this property.  Recommended.
