Jinnrise #4 Review

With this interstellar conflict heating up, can our heroes survive the precarious situations now surrounding them?  Read on to find out.

The official description from IDW:

Saved from interstellar forces, student Andrew Marcus’ fate rests in the hands of Yunus…a boy in control of a living “myth”: a Jinn (Genie). But can a single Jinn stand against these invaders…led by their greatest warrior, Lahasad-Brim? The answer might depend on a wildcard: a mysterious stranger who might be friend…or foe.

When it comes to searching for an original comic book, it may seem a bit outlandish, but Jinnrise is one that makes the list despite it centering on an alien invasion.  The creative team brings so much unique material to bare that its dedicated audience has no choice other than to simply turn off their brains and just have a ball with the concepts bouncing around this diverse landscape.

Sohaib Awan with a script assist by Paige Hartman, delivers yet another compelling outing that may not entertain any notions that require much depth but he certainly delivers in every other possible conceivable way.  I was a bit disappointed by the abrupt resolution from the cliffhanger ending found at the conclusion of the second issue, but nonetheless I quickly found myself grinning from the simple addition of yet another hero.  In short, this was a fun read that deserves to earn a spot on your weekly pull-list.

Tony Vassallo handles the art and the seasoned talent delivers chaotic visualizations that continue to build this stylistic world surrounding the narrative.  There were a few unflattering renditions of some of the prominent characters, as some intended deformities came off a bit too wonky but more often than not I found myself simply pulled into the illustrations.  The jaunt was made even stronger as some very distinctive pieces helped to carry this tale to a solid cliffhanger.

Jinnrise #4 impressed almost as much as this brand new series has from the get-go.  I had no idea what I was getting into when I first started covering this title, but now I do and I’m hooked.  Recommended.
