Jennifer Blood #29 Review

With the walls closing in on her can this woman formerly known as a Blute survive long enough to find her family?  Read on to find out.

The official description from Dynamite:

It’s a stand-off. On one side, more than fifty highly-trained FBI agents and SWAT officers. On the other side, Jennifer Blood. She’s finally been cornered… but only a fool would corner a wild animal.

Cornered and outgunned might be a problem for the average brutal vigilante, but as this latest outing proves our unique mother of two will go to any lengths to survive and find her kids.  In a very sweet and certainly morbid fashion the creative team crafts a tale that from start to finish is befitting the core mechanics of this complicated but compelling anti-hero.

Mike Carroll pens the script and the current series scribe does an outstanding job building up this latest story arc as he steers this ship toward inevitable confrontations that will both be unique and endlessly engaging to witness.  I found the dialogue to be the strongest component in this affair but there were moments where it became painfully obvious that the conversations were being used more to stall the progression of the saga, instead of propelling it to this releases assured conclusion.  In short: the author does a good job writing the title I just wish the pace on this package would quicken up a bit.

Eman Casallos handles the art and I have to say the work here is crisp and clean as it does exactly what the narrative calls for.  The pencil strokes evoke the high tension scenario quite well while also giving both our heroins and her antagonists enough personality to sell this unique stalemate.  There were quite a few panels where I was absolutely impressed with the final results as lightly detailed visuals simply popped off the page because of two apparent factors: structure by the illustrator and the colors by Rob Steen.

Jennifer Blood #29 is another excellent release that moves the story forward just enough to keep my interest peeked as it earns my recommendation.
