Jennifer Blood #20 Review

What will happen to our determined protagonist with so many interested parties on her tail?  Read on to find out.

The official description from Dynamite:

Revere, New Mexico, doesn’t get many visitors. There’s Louis Blue, the meth kingpin, out of his territory. Elaine Pruitt, the homicide detective, out of her jurisdiction. Ray Buwick, the wetworks agent, out of his mind. And of course, the reason they’re all there… Jen Fellows, the mother of two. Out for blood…

What we have here is an issue that’s more or less the calm before a massive storm.  Yes, there’s been plenty of crazy plot advances in the past few months for this series but now there’s chum in the proverbial wateras several interested people make plans to descend on what’s left of Jennifer Blood and her family.

Al Ewing delivers a more than competent script, as the series writer continues to move things along in a somewhat methodical fashion toward whatever arc he has planned next.  He uses the new location to delve deeper into Jessica Blute while exploring her familiar but nonetheless fascinating character quirks in an environment that invites the analysis.  With the small town back-drop our character is forced to deal with a more secluded lifestyle that may or may not be the last free one she will ever have.  The end result is a very entertaining read that successfully sets the stage for the forthcoming showdowns.

Eman Casallos does an outstanding job on the art.  From the careful placement of details to the formation of backgrounds, he uses his seasoned skills to sell the tale in the best ways possible.  There are moments where unnecessary deformities detract slightly from the work on display but overall I was honestly impressed with the level of character established through the use of some very expressive faces and actions.

Both the review copy and the website solicit credit you for it. If it’s not you who handled the art do you know who did?
