Jennifer Blood #19 Review

This series has embarked in a bold new direction, but is it really one worth following?  Read on to find out.

The official description from Dynamite:

We jump forward in time to find out how Jen’s coping. How far will she go to “protect” her family in the aftermath of Tuesday’s events? (Seriously, there’s got to be a limit… right?) And how far will Detective Pruitt go to get justice for Jen’s ever-increasing list of crimes? The new arc begins with a bang!

It only took one specific act to send this saga down a drastically different path: our heroine has been outed for the vengeful murderess she is.  The results spilling from her actions have led to her dragging her children on a cross country killing spree to chase what’s left of her warped version of the American dream.

Al Ewing delivers another fantastic script that plays up quite a few corny moments while entertaining the prevalent dark soul that has maintained a thoroughly engrossing atmosphere.  The characters themselves do not receive much development at this point, which is perfectly fine considering how well-defined they already are.  Their decisions seem more than reasonable in these extreme situations as one bloody convenience store shooting leads to a massacre at a gas station in this top-notch jaunt.

Kewber Baal delivers some exceptional work in this latest release.  From the moment you crack open the first page you’ll be captivated by the explosive panel designs that match the script blow for blow.  Our protagonist is on the run and the choices she decides to follow through on are beautifully rendered by our artist’s concentrated and slightly conservative pencil strokes.

Jennifer Blood #19 is yet another stellar release that’s well worth any fan’s time.  It’s won’t be for every comic book reader out there, but if you’re open to the concept you  won’t regret this purchase.  Recommended.
