Invincible #94 Review

A major secret of Robot and Monster Girl’s time in the Flaxan dimension is revealed and the battle comes to a head in Invincible #94. Here’s the official description from Image:

The new Invincible faces defeat at the hands of the Flaxan Army! The Guardians of the Globe have fallen! What is Monster Girl and Robot’s part in all this? How are they responsible? More of their past in the Flaxan dimension is revealed. And where is Mark Grayson during all this?

We’ve been building up to this reveal for several issues now, and my reaction was mixed. On one hand, I started to suspect what the twist would be a few pages into the issue, so it lost some of it’s impact. On the other, Robert Kirkman did a great job building up to it, and I’m looking forward to seeing the effect on our characters.

Mark Grayson remains sidelined, appearing on only a single page. As someone who’s only been reading for a few issues, it’s strange, because I still don’t know much about the series’ main character, but that’s merely because I started reading at a bad time.

Ryan Ottley and original series artist Cory Walker continue to split art duties. I have to confess that I often become so engrossed in story that I don’t notice when artists for a book change from one page to the next, unless the styles are incredibly different. Keeping that in mind, I think the current story arc of Invincible would have been better if there was a greater contrast between the two artists. The most noticeable difference from page to page is the inking. Walker inks his own work and does it very lightly, while Cliff Rathburn inks Ottley’s pages and lays them on strong, although he doesn’t overdo it.

Overall I have to say I was pleased with this issue. Robert Kirkman delivers an emotional and gripping installment for the series with Invincible #94, and whether you guess the cliffhanger or not, you should be excited for next month.
