Indestructible #3 Review

Indestructible Banner

Can this misunderstanding still be somewhat amusing after three issues? Read on to find out.

The official description from IDW:

For Greg Pincus, life as the world’s newest superhero isn’t all groupies and Goldschlager. Between fielding calls from rival super teams, shopping for the right agent, and finding a costume that doesn’t bind, things have gotten pretty chaotic. Worst of all, Greg has a secret: he doesn’t actually possess any superpowers! As enemies gather in the shadows, Greg quickly realizes that keeping his secret could mean the difference between life and death. For himself… and everyone around him.

Indestructible 3_CThere’s a cost to going public, especially if you’re not who you say you are. And that’s the lesson our would-be hero is in the process learning, but it’s hard to let go when this new role comes with benefits. I have to give credit to the creative team because as tired as this premise should feel it honestly comes off as fresh.

The words by Jeff Kline carry an air of comedic finesse, as these slacker shenanigans barrel forward. True to form we get to see the hi-jinks that we’ve become accustomed to, even as physical jabs at laughter seem rather repetitive and even unnecessary. The dynamic duo at the center of this jaunt, along with their problems, reach a sturdy stride within the confines of this release. And I’d even say that the author dances dangerously close to social commentary, as he implements a few nuggets that guarantee that #4 should be worthwhile.

The art by Chris Johnson continues to be a potent aspect in these festivities. Capturing each innate action and reaction, we see a talent that understands the highs and lows of these characters. He plays their strengths as a barrage of detail engulfs each sequence. From the first panel to the final page there’s a lot to love and I ended up with only a few moments that bothered me.

Indestructible #3 is just what I expected it to be: fun, mindless and occasionally full of heart. It stumbles more often than I’d like but still earns a recommendation.
