Grimm Universe #5 Review

The event barrels forward, but is it offering a narrative that’s worthy enough to hold your interest?  Read on to find out.

The official description from Zenescope:

The mysterious origin of THE BEING is finally revealed!

As Sela and the Hunters race toward the Being’s location, a collective of ancient entities known as the Keepers descend on Earth. Their dark ties to the Being will reveal the truth of the creature’s creation, but have they arrived too late to stop him from eviscerating the planet? The end of it all is near – don’t miss this action-packed issue of UNLEASHED, the biggest Zenescope event of all time!

When a man or woman has failed enough are they beyond redemption?  It’s an interesting quandary that’s been presented to the fans of this franchise, as the implications of one father’s failures bubble to the surface of this arc.

When it come to this specific shared universe Pat Shand has become quite prolific in his ability to execute meaningful scripts even in the face of some odd concepts.  This latest chunk of glory is more of the same as the author gives us something that will hold your attention based on the subject matter and the revelations therein.  In truth this release may not be as sharp as it should be, especially when it comes to subtlety but the author finds a way to make it work.

Butch Mapa lends his hand to the visual side of this affair and I have to say the results match the quality of the concept.  The pencil strokes expand and contract as the text sees fit, but there were times where it became rather obvious when this talent took his time on a specific panel or simply rushed through it.  For the most part you can feel the love and care here but there were enough missteps to detract a bit from the body of work.

Grimm Universe #5 is an excellent comic that may not be all that it needs to be but nonetheless it manages to wow just enough in order to earn a recommendation.
