Grimm Fairy Tales presents Wonderland: Down the Rabbit Hole #1 Review

Do we really need to explore this story?  Read on to find out.

The official description from Zenescope:

The BRAND NEW WONDERLAND “PREQUEL” TRILOGY begins here and the story you thought you knew will never be looked at the same again! Alice Liddle has escaped a dimension of horror and madness called Wonderland but not without dire consequences. Struggling with a now shattered psyche, Alice must prevent the evil beings that inhabit that realm from slipping into this world and infecting everyone she holds dear. But that is easier said than done as a mysterious entity is revealed to have been manipulating events from the very beginning.

As this pilot issue comes to a close I can honestly say with a smile that this is one journey that any fan of this franchise simply needs to take.  From the sharp words to the riveting plot the creative team is literally firing on all cylinders as this delicious tale gets underway.

Raven Gregory and Pat Shand handle the script and the authors do an absolutely brilliant job realizing the journey of Alice Liddle and the aftermath of her experience in Wonderland.  We see some serious terrors brought on by horrors beyond imagine as she slowly but surely attempts to face her demons on some level.  There are some devastating sequences here, even this early on, as madness creeps up on her in a way that she’s just not prepared for resulting in the setting up a riveting cliffhanger as the future barrels forward.

The art by Gregbo Watson and Yusuf Idrias does more than enough right to nail the ultimate cadence of this literary jaunt.  The simplistically detailed but sophisticated structured designs give way to some vibrant images that simply explode off the page.  Each panel is handled with an absolutely enthralling level of consistency that establishes the strength of the saga early on while making it into something unique.

Grimm Fairy Tales presents Wonderland: Down the Rabbit Hole #1 is a comic book that’s simply a must buy whether you’re a devoted follower of Wonderland‘s stories or not.  Highly recommended.
