Grimm Fairy Tales presents Realm Knights One Shot #1 Review

Can the most powerful people in the world do anything to fight change? Read on to find out.

The official description from Zenescope:

The earth is changing…the powerful Highborns who had remained hidden for so long have come out in the open and many of them do not have the best intentions for human kind. The Dark One and his Horde want control of the realms of power starting with the nexus and there are even more sinister threats still hiding in the shadows. How can humans hope to survive against beings of such incredible power? Alone they have no hope but fortune has smiled on them…in the form of the Realm Knights, a powerful team of Highborn’s who’ve made it their job to protect earth and all the realms of power from the forces of evil.

Ever since these heroes and villains were revealed to the world to be a stark reality the government has been looking for a way to deal with them.  Thanks to this creative team they got it, and the solution is more familiar than you might think.

Pat Shand pens the script and seasoned professional seems to know exactly what he’s going for as the narrative mirrors several plot points from the most recent Avengers film adaptation.  From the make-up of the team to the reasons behind their agreement to unite there are many not so subtle nods to that feature.  Much to my chagrin the text here comes off rather wonky as it’s plagued by some unnecessary exposition that undermine the story’s ultimate level of quality.

The art by Noah Salonga and Wagner Souza creates a competent view of this world.  There were times where facial features during the more action oriented panels seemed off from their usual appearance.  That being, said as a whole, their renditions of this universe work well enough to match and at time exceed the quality of the script.

Grimm Fairy Tales presents Realm Knights One Shot #1 acts more like a springboard than an actual standalone yarn but it does just enough right to earn a light recommendation.
