Grimm Fairy tales presents Oz #3 Review

This journey through this frightful land continues, but is this one odyssey which doesn’t need to exist?  Read on to find out.

The official description from Zenescope:

Dorothy’s travels through the land of Oz in search of the Veridian Scepter bring her face to face with one danger after another.  Luckily along with the danger with the she also finds new allies in the Lion, Tin Man and Scarecrow…but unknown to Dorothy and Glinda one of these new companions may not be the noble friend they pretend to be.

The creative team has successfully taken the origins of the classic tale and re-imagined it in a way that highlights the strength of the Grimm Fairy Tales universe.  There are some missteps along the way but when taken into account with the overall events of this burgeoning property, the forces behind it handily deliver a stellar third outing.

Joe Brusha pens this outlandish yarn by choosing to anchor it within our grounded protagonist, Dorothy Gale.  Our heroine and her cohorts are continuing their journey to find the pieces of the Veridian Scepter, but along the way they have to deal with a few ambushes as their party faces dire consequences.  At the beginning there’s a strange sense of calm as each player falls into their role, and it’s through that plus some corny moments that the script itself suffers some bumps and bruises.  But by the end of the comic the road toward the next volume is lit up by a stellar cliffhanger.

The art by Rolando Di Sessa is solid from the first page to the last panel.  The work of the illustrator is slightly similar to Greg Land, as his steady hand builds a detailed atmosphere full of monsters and attractive women.  There were a couple moments where the overall sense of self came into question, as some of the structures looked far too bare.  Ultimately this yielded some lackluster visualizations but the bulk of the renditions were quite good.

Grimm Fairy Tales presents Oz #3 is a solid entry that’s also a true midpoint in this expanding adventure.  Recommended.
