Grimm Fairy Tales presents No Tomorrow #2 Review

Can anyone escape fate?  Read on to find out.

The official description from Zenescope:

After surviving his near brush with death, Patrick has begun noticing peculiar appearances of the mysterious pale woman he saw before the destruction of his office building.  Appearances that defy all rules of logic and possibility.  Appearances across the world where tragic events have left an ever growing trend of death and murder.  But as he learns more about Keres past he will come to realize that if you look for death, then death will come looking for you.

The idea that death is literally after you is a frightening concept, even for a company that prides itself on terrifying its readers.  The creative team capitalizes on that emotion in a way that simply brings stimulation to something that on face value might seem a bit familiar.

Raven Gregory pens the script in stellar fashion. From the first page to the final panel he finds a way to not only build up the narrative meat but also deliver some essential family moments that sell the dire needs of our protagonist, Partick Gale.  To a more interesting note, he highlights why this goddess of death might be a bit fearful.  We don’t see all the cards but for some reason this man is escaping her grasp and this force of nature has no idea how or why.  There are some stumbles along the way as the text is overburdened with exposition ultimately causing the pace to be a little uneven.

The art by Luca Claretti is impressive.  The talent seamlessly builds up this world with a consistent hand and a steady amount of detail.  None of the panels felt overburdened by unnecessary tangents, instead I found that each page carried enough effective nuances to help me buy into what could only be described as a rather outlandish concept.  I was particularly captivated with the chilling closing sequence and how the illustrator closed his impressive body of work.

Grimm Fairy Tales presents No Tomorrow #2 is an engaging piece that deserves the opportunity to be on your pull-list.  Recommended.
