GREEN LANTERN “Godhead” Event Pits The Corps Against The New Gods

The Green Lanterns and other colored Corps can’t get a moment of peace. From Blackest Night and War of the Green Lanterns to Wrath of the First Lantern and the current Uprising, our intrepid Corps haven’t had time to catch a break from universe-ending threats for years. What if Hal Jordan wants to kick back on the beach and guzzle a few beers? What if Guy Gardner wants to try out for amateur boxing? What if John Stewart wants to finally finish the blueprints of his masterpiece building? Sorry guys, there’s more cosmic crises on the horizon!

Nerdist has announced the next crossover event for all the Green Lantern family books, entitled Godhead. Following up on the conclusion of last year’s Lights Out, which had Kyle Rayner enter the Source Wall and replenished the supply of emotional spectrum, as well as imprisoned Relic within the Wall. There’s just one snag: apparently this also allowed them to steal “secrets of immense power,” and someone isn’t too happy about that.

Highfather, the leader of the New Gods, knows what they did and is trying to finds those secrets for himself by using one ring of every color of the emotional spectrum. Of course, nothing is ever that simple and what follows will threaten to alter the very fabric of the universe as we know it in “Godhead”, a monthlong crossover event that finds Green Lantern and the New Gods entangled in a struggle for intergalactic survival.

Unless you’re Kyle Rayner, harnessing the power of seven rings is a lot harder than you think. The New Gods have appeared in titles like Wonder Woman, and they’ve recently gotten involved in the series Infinity Man and The Tomorrow People, but this looks to be their biggest New 52 appearance yet! Ever since the Source Wall was reintroduced last year, it was only a matter of time before these famous deities crossed paths with the multicolored Corps.

You can read the full solicitations below, but I want to point something out first. Each issue is labeled as Act 1, Part _. That implies there’s at least a second act with this crossover. Look, I’m a big Green Lantern fan. Even though Batman is my favorite character, the Green Lantern books have been my favorites in terms of ongoing stories. That being said, they need to take a rest at some point. From 2007 until now, there have been at least six major Green Lantern crossovers (seven if you count the current Green Lantern/Green Lantern Corps story Uprising). The backlog of overtime pay for the Green Lanterns must be huge!

I realize that the sectors are filled with alien villainy, but seriously, let everyone take a breather. At this point, there’s no way I could recommend the current Green Lantern books to a new reader because there’s just way too much going on. DC, do us a favor. After Godhead is over, just dial it down with the Lanterns. Limit yourself to smaller story arcs. With all the times the universe has almost ended recently, let’s have all the Lanterns take on smaller missions. Hell, I’d say they deserve a vacation at this point. Not even Superman has had to deal with this much crap lately.

Okay, rant is over, and I am in fact looking forward to see how this conflict with the New Gods goes down. Check out the full solicitations and covers for the first six issues of this event.
