GODZILLA #12 Review

Spoilers ahead.

The penultimate issue of the GODZILLA Ongoing is finally here. Does it deliver more of the overdue monster action? Definitely, this is one of the most epic issues yet.

Here’s the official description from IDW:

It all comes down to this… Godzilla vs. his mightiest enemy yet! The fate of the world hangs in the balance! What role will Boxer play? Will he be Godzilla’s salvation or destruction? It’s all been building to this, don’t miss it!

I had to take a few moments to reflect on all this, because there’s quite a few moments Godzilla fans like myself will geek-out for. I’ve called the Ongoing pretty average in the past, but these past few issues have been slowly making up for it. The previous issue ended with Godzilla confronting SpaceGodzilla and Monster X, quite the deadly team-up. The only complaint people might have is that SpaceGodzilla is kind of pushed to the side in favor of Monster X’s real form, Keizer Ghidorah. I don’t mind personally, it’s just something fans of the character might not like. Still, it’s great stuff.

Duane Swierczynski lets the reader have it with all-out action. Boxer’s scenes are pretty good, and there’s a sense of tension with Miss Asuka, since we’re not sure if she’s going to make it. In a surprising turn, Claire returns. Her dialogue is definitely funny, further showing us she’s one of the best human characters of the series. Gigan and Rodan continue their brutal fight, it’s good stuff. Sadly Mothra doesn’t make an appearance, and we’re not really sure what happened to Kumonga. I’m assuming these things will be answered in the next issue. The biggest thing about #12 however is the inclusion of Keizer Ghidorah. The one page spread with him towering over Godzilla is just amazing.

Simon Gane’s art is fantastic. There’s a really incredible panel spread of Rodan flying presumably to Godzilla’s aid, the art fully captures the pteranodon. The battles are drawn wonderfully, blows are felt. Godzilla, while he has lacked emotion in earlier issues, is drawn with some great expressions here. His reaction to seeing Keizer Ghidorah was extremely well done. The main cover by the always artistic Bob Eggleton depicts Godzilla and Monster X, another great piece. The Matt Frank variant is the connecting cover from the previous issue, another dynamic one fans will like.

Overall, another epic issue. The climax in the Ongoing has been nothing short of spectacular. Big things happen here, it’s nonstop monster action with some heavy tension and suspense. It is a good day to be a Godzilla fan. Issue #13 is sure to be a wild ride.
